Friends of the Maasai 2025 Activity and Impact Report

Friends of the Maasai supported seven projects in 2025, involving a total investment of € 19,000. This was announced in the 2025 Activity and Impact Report of the foundation.

Prior to the cooperation with the community-based organizations in Tikoishi and Orpirikata (southern Kenya) these communities identified their main challenges and priorities for achieving eco-friendly self-sufficiency within approximately ten years. Based on these ambitions, three core focus areas were selected for long-term collaboration: agriculture and food security, access to clean water, and empowerment/education.

In 2025, Friends of the Maasai supported seven initiatives launched or completed by the two community-based organizations (CBOs) in these villages: BeCuL (in Tikoishi) and Olmeguarra (in Orpirikata).

In Tikoishi, solar panels were installed to replace the diesel motor of the local water pump, a project completed with support from Kajiado County. These panels are part of a holistic watermanagement plan which is initiated across both the Tikoishi and Orpirikata communities.

Beekeeping initiatives were also introduced, featuring the installation of beehives alongside specialized training in honey production and marketing.

Meanwhile, preparations began to launch permaculture knowledge centers across Kajiado, Narok, and Laikipia.

In Narok, Tikoishi, and Orpirikata, more than 1,000 youth from pastoralist backgrounds are currently participating in a three-year mentorship program. BeCuL and Olmeguarra continued the programs in their communities. Furthermore, Friends of the Maasai started support for the school-based mentor program run by The Nomad Child Foundation in Narok county focusing on pastoralist girls. These initiatives provide vital guidance on education, healthcare, human rights, and leadership. Early results from the program show promising improvements in school attendance, school performance, and self-esteem among the participants.

Despite various disappointments and setbacks, which are part of daily life of the Maasai, the communities in Tikoishi and Orpirikata achieved solid progress in 2025.

Expanding cooperation with CBOs in other regions—including Nkoilale, Narok, and Laikipia—is fostering mutual learning and driving new initiatives.

Concurrently, both CBOs spend a lot of time and effort to enhance the board's professionalism and the governance of both organizations.
