Friends of the Maasai
13 mrt 2026
Eight years ago, on 14th March 2018, Friends of the Maasai was founded. After a start that was somewhat hampered by corona our cooperation with the Maasai communities in Kenya is in full swing now.
Community and kitchen gardens were introduced in the villages of Tikoishi and Orpirikata, the communities started with bee hives and honey harvesting, the first steps to improve access to clean water for people and livestock were made, permaculture trainings were organized and in several well attended meetings hundreds of girls were empowered and educated to deal with the challenges in their lifes.
In both villages community based organizations (CBOs) were founded to facilitate local people to take responsibility to make their communities more futureproof in an environmentally and animal friendly way.
Many new plans are made now, e.g. regarding knowledge sharing and innovation in food and regenerative agriculture, a clean water distribution system, mentoring and empowering young people, new income generating activities and new trainings on finance management and computer skills.
During these 8 years our network expanded substantially with new partners such as Nkoilale Community Development Foundation, The Nomad Child Foundation, Laikipia Permaculture Center and many others.
All activities we support are community led. This means that priorities, proposals and concrete plans are developed and managed by the Maasai.
Friends of the Maasai supports them with knowledge, our network, communication and fund raising. Supported by intensive app and email communication, regular telephone calls and each year a field trip of our board our cooperation works very well.
We - as board of Friends of the Maasai - are very glad with the progress we make to make our local Maasai friends more self sufficient and resilient to the major effects of climate change.
If you want to support the Maasai you can donate your contribution here.
We are sure that they will be very grateful for your support.
