Friends of the Maasai
5 jan 2026
In previous news flashes we put the spotlight on Faith Supeet and Purity Ntanin Meikan as young and inspiring SDG leaders in the Maasai community in Kenya. Today we focus on Nelson Ole Kirrokor.
Nelson Ole Kirrokor is a respected community leader from Nkoilale village near the Maasai Mara in Kenya. By his leadership Nelson transforms a fast growing number of lives through education, clean water access, environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
As a boy Nelson was very eager to learn. Inspired by the value of education and his experience as a knowledgeable tour guide in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, he founded the Nkoilale Development Community Foundation in 2010.
Through his inspiring leadership the community successfully established four schools within Nkoilale Village since then, significantly improving access to education for local children.
Access to clean water has also been a major achievement. The community protects a natural water spring now and pipes clean water over a distance of 13 kilometers, supplying schools and households across the village. These efforts have greatly improved health, hygiene and daily living conditions. A healthcare center was also established to strengthen access to basic medical services.
Economic empowerment is a key focus of Nelson’s work. Several income-generating activities have been introduced, including women-led initiatives in beadwork, beekeeping, micro-finance and organic soap making. The organic soap production initiative provides sustainable income opportunities while promoting environmentally friendly products.
In his vision environmental conservation remains central to community development. Tree-planting activities in schools and homesteads have been carried out to enhance climate resilience, protect biodiversity and instill environmental awareness among young people. A community climate resilience center further supports local adaptation to climate change.

SDG leadership
Nelson is a great example of leadership working on and supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). These SDGs were introduced by the United Nations in 2015 aiming to make the world a better place in 2030. No poverty, good health, education, equality, clean water and combatting climate change are some of the issues that are adressed in these 17 global goals.
Nelson’s leadership strongly aligns with the SDGs, translating global objectives into meaningful local action.
Because of his leading role Friends of the Maasai chairman Willem Lageweg awarded Nelson Ole Kirrokor with the SDG pin during a field trip to Maasailand in November last year.
Friends of the Maasai is proud that Nelson is advisor and ambassador of our organisation. We will gladly continue our mutual cooperation in the coming years.
