Next step in empowering local Maasai communities

Friends of the Maasai

3 jun 2025

Faith Supeet, leader of the community based organisation BeCul in Maasailand, visited the Netherlands in the 2nd half of May. She spent a few days of her stay talking with the board of Friends of the Maasai and visiting projects that can inspire the Maasai community she is leading.

During the talks and visits many subjects have been discussed:
  • how to improve vegetable production and community gardens as an addition to the traditional nomadic way of living of the Maasai which is hard to continue because of climate change and severe droughts
  • developing a self sustaining water distribution system which brings clean water for the people and the gardens and the livestock as well
  • building a permaculture knowledge center
  • mentorship programs to make people - and especially young people - aware and equipped to solve all kind of social and cultural issues
  • projectmanagement, finance, funding and reporting
  • etc

The cooperation between BeCul in Tikoishi, the sister CBO Olmeguarra in Orpirikata and Friends of the Maasai is based on a ten years agreement to work together to make these Maasai communities more self sufficient and future proof.

The meetings between Faith and the board of Friends of the Maasai strengthened the ties between both worlds and will enlarge the impact of the cooperation. In the coming months in the communities a lot of work will be done to realise projects regarding agriculture and food, water and empowerment. At the end of this year a delegation of the board of Friends of the Maasai will visit the communities to realise new milestones in the mutual cooperation.
